The educational structure in Cambodia consists of six years of primary school (grades 1–6), three years of lower secondary school (grades 7–9), and three years of upper secondary school (grades 10–12). Secondary education has a little over one fourth of the eligible children enrolled, and it drops even more on the university level with barely 1 % of the university-age population enrolled in an institution of higher learning. The adult population has a literacy rate of about 35%. Public education in Cambodia is compulsory as well as free.
