Hurricane Georges damaged in 1998 about 170,000 homes in the Dominican Republic, about 10% of the nation's entire housing stock. About 49,000 of these homes were completely destroyed. Many of these homes have been rebuilt. Most dwellings are detached houses, others are apartmentbuildings. Houses in Santo Domingo are often colorful, and many houses and apartments have balconies. Concrete, wood, and palm are the most frequently used construction materials for dwellings.
