About half of all homes in Cuba are detached houses, the remainder being apartments, palm huts called hohios, and cuarterias, housing units in buildings composed of a number of detached rooms where occupants share some or all facilities. Housing conditions are generally better in urban areas than in rural areas even though the standard gets very low, and many people live in shanty towns. In Havana you find many beautiful old colonial buildings.
