Djibouti City has a reputation of being a messy and dirty city. It is true for a big part, as garbage is often dumped in the streets without anyone taking it away, creating a smelly and messy environment. There is, though, an area in the center of Djibouti City were the streets are in fine shape, and where you can enjoy the lovely atmosphere and the French colonial architecture. But messy or not, the streets have their own charm. Paved roads in fair condition lead to the provincial capitals of Tadjoura, Ali Sabieh, and Dikhil. Otherwise, most travel within the country requires four-wheel drive.
