In the capital of Guinea, Conakry, most residential buildings are low with one to four rooms. Wealthier residents live in modern, luxurious homes. In the countryside, many people live in small mud huts with thatched roofs, structures that are cool and easy to maintain. Members of the same household often sleep in separate dwellings, but with their doors open onto a communal space where cooking and social interaction take place. These family compounds accommodate the large extended families.
