Over 80% of the Ethiopian population are working as farmers on a larger or smaller scale. Coffee farming is important as coffee provides over 56% of the countrys exports earnings. Also qat farming contributes on a large scale to the countrys economy, and the cereal tef which is the main ingredient in the national dish, injera, is important as well. Unemplyoment rate in the urban areas is very high, about 50 %, and many families struggle to get by; you therefore often see children working when they are very young, typically selling paper napkins etc. in the street. A typical job for children in the country is working in the fields or tending livestock.
