The archaeological site of Copán is located in western Honduras, and represents a classic period Maya temple and regional center. The site has temples, stelae, altars, and residences. The stone carved Hieroglyphic Stairway is the longest classic Maya inscription, with more than 2200 glyphs. The first occupations at Copán were there by around 1000 BC; at the height of the Maya control of the city in AD 400-850, a total of about 27,000 people lived in Copán. In 1997, a royal burial was found at Copan, including the famous Red Lady, covered in cinnabar.
