All children in United Kingdom must, by law, receive full-time education between the ages of five and 16. Between the ages of two and five, many children attend pre-school. Children start primary school education in the term after their fifth birthday. Primary education is divided into infants (five to seven) and juniors (seven to 11). The two stages can be combined in one primary school or separated into infant schools and junior schools. Most pupils start secondary school at 11 years old. All secondary schools take pupils through to 16 years of age, when compulsory education ends. At some pupils may stay on until 18 to complete A levels or further vocational study. Further education may also be continued at a college.
