Most housing units in Guyana are detached houses. Owners occupy over half of all dwellings. Most houses are made from wood, with a smaller part made either of wood and concrete or concrete. It is common for houses along the coast (where most Guyanese live) to have the basement of the house flooded. Consequently many people have their houses on stilts or have a small ground floor (stair well) with the real residence upstairs.
