The Little Mermaid: The sculpture based on Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale has become the symbol of Denmark, even though she is very small and modest. She sits in the Copenhagen harbor. Kronborg castle: Kronborg castle in Elsinore is the setting for much of William Shakespeare's famous tragedy Hamlet, Prince of Denmark. Holger Danske: In Kronborg castle sits the statue of Holger Danske, another symbol of Denmark. Legend has it that Holger Danske is asleep there until some day when Denmark is in mortal danger, at which time he will rise up and deliver the nation. Christiania: Christiania, also known as Freetown Christiania, but most commonly known amongst its inhabitants and visitors as "fristaden" or simply "staden", is a partially self-governing neighbourhood of about 850 residents, covering 34 hectares (85 acres) in Copenhagen. Christiania has established semi-legal status as an independent community. Christiania has existed since 1971. Tivoli Gardens: Tivoli Gardens is a famous amusement park and pleasure garden in Copenhagen. The park opened on August 15 1843 and, except for Dyrehavsbakken in nearby Klampenborg, it is the oldest amusement park in the world which has survived intact to the present day.
