More than 90% of the Netherlands Antilles population live in urban areas. The rural population of the islands is very small, and villages are few, except on Saba. CuraƧao is known for its landhuizen, large 18th- and 19th-century rural mansions located on hills. Willemstad has its characteristic Dutch-style colonial architecture with tropical adaptations, painted in white and bright pastel colours.
