The main festival of the year in Denmark is Christmas Eve. Christmas Eve is celebrated on December 24, which is referred to as Juleaften. An evening meal is eaten with the family consisting of either roast pork or/and roast duck which is eaten with potatoes, red cabbage and plenty of gravy. For dessert rice pudding (ris a la mande) is served, traditionally with an almond hidden inside. The lucky finder of this almond is entitled to a small gift. After the meal is complete, the family gathers around the Christmas tree and sing Christmas songs, often dancing around the tree. When the singing and dancing is complete, presents will be handed out one by one. Traditional Christmas decoration is mainly kravlenisser (mischievous little paper pixies) and hearts, but also cornets and drums etc. are used.
