The population of Morocco is mostly Arab and Berber. The Berbers were the region's original inhabitants before the arrival of the Arabs in the 7th century. Berbers live in towns and villages in the Atlas Mountains and in the Saharan lands. About one third of the population speak a Berber language. Arabic is the official language, though French is an important second language. Arabic-speaking people live primarily in cities and towns in the lowlands and agricultural lands. More than half of Morocco's people live in urban areas.
