Very close to all of Poland's population is of Polish European descent. Small minority groups include Germans, Ukrainians, and Belarussians. Before World War II the population of Poland was multi ethnic, but 5 years of Nazi occupation resulted in heavy loss of life. The heaviest losses were suffered by Poland's Jewish population, the vast majority of whom died in extermination camps. Many citizens of Polish descent also died in concentration camps, labor camps, prisons, or during forced labor.
