Nicolae Ceauşescu: Nicolae Ceauşescu was leader of Romania from 1965 until December 1989, when a revolution and coup removed him from power. The revolutionaries held a two hour trial and sentenced him to death for crimes against the state, genocide, and undermining the national economy. The centre piece of Ceausescu's new Romania was built on the rubble of Bucharest's old quarter. At its centre sits the infamous Palatul Parliamentului, the Palace of Parliament, the third biggest building on earth after the Pentagon and the Tibetan Potala. Over 20,000 labourers and 600 architects toiled to build the Palace to Ceausescu's exacting standards. Village Museum: One of Bucharest's sights is the Village Museum, situated within the Herastrau Park alongside a lake. It is an outdoor museum with a collection that spans more than 300 buildings representing the history and design of Romania's rural architecture including peasant homes, barns, wooden churches and Transylvanian houses from all regions of the country to recreate a village setting. Traditionally dressed peasant workers portray life during the 16th and 17th centuries along with everyday tools and accessories.
