The isolation of the islands long before the evolution of mammals on the planet, means that the only mammals which occur here naturally are those that could fly. Thus, there is a large resident fruit bat population. Other animals foud on the islands are giant tortoises, hawksbill and green turtles. Aldabra island is home to the largest population of giant tortoises in the world. These creatures can live for more than a century and weigh up to 250kg.
