Even though there is no state religion, almost all of the Polish population is Roman Catholic, and a large number are practicing Catholics. Poland got it's first pope by the election in 1978 of the archbishop of Kraków, Karol Cardinal Wojtyla, as Pope John Paul II, the first non-Italian pope since the 16th century. There are small numbers of Jews and Muslims, as well as a few Christian groups practising in Poland.
