The many phases of Vietnam's history has put its mark on the its cities. The French in particular left behind an impressive legacy of colonial architecture, particularly in Hanoi, Hue, and Saigon. Vietnamese rural villages have a variety of architectural styles. Village residents in lowland river deltas usually live in closely built family compounds that feature rectangular-shaped houses made of brick and mortar. Compounds often have large open areas on the ground for drying rice.
