The Vietnamese government recognizes more than 50 ethnic groups. Of these the ethnic Vietnamese, or the Viet, is the largest group, accounting for about 86% of the nation's population. The ethnic Vietnamese inhabit little less than half of Vietnam, while the ethnic minorities inhabit the rest. The ethnic Vietnamese live in the lowlands and speak the Vietnamese language which is the official language of the country. This group dominates much of the cultural and political landscape of Vietnam.
