The second largest and most populated continent in the world, Africa is the only continent reaching from temperate climatic zones on the northern hemisphere to temperate zones on the southern hemisphere. However, since it lacks cooling effects of regular precipitation or glacial influence, most of the countries in Africa know a hot climate. It is also the continent with most wild animals roaming free; it is well-known for its elephants, lions, giraffes and other animals not existing anywhere else. The continent was almost entirely colonized by European powers, and the post-independence period (starting in the 1960s) sees the birth of new nations along arbitrary borders. |
