Het croissantje is uitgevonden in Oostenrijk. Volgens de legende werd het voor het eerst in Wenen gemaakt om de overwinning op de Turken te vieren die het land in 1683 waren binnengevallen. Het bladerdeeg broodje werd gemaakt in de vorm van de maan in de Turkse vlag.
