Myanmar is a predominantly Buddhist country with Buddhism of the Theravada school being practiced by nearly 90 per cent of the population. Other religions practiced in Myanmar are Christianity (6 per cent), Islam (4 per cent), and Hinduism (nearly 1 per cent). Religion plays a vital role in a Myanmar Buddhist’s life, with Buddhist rituals being closely incorporated into the people’s everyday routines. By the time a child is about seven years of age, the parents have to send him or her to the monastery to follow some Buddhist teachings and practice.
