The population of Surinam is one of the most ethnically varied in the world. It is made up primarily from Hindustani (East Indian) 37%, Creole 31%, Javanese 15%, Amerindians 3%, Chinese 1.7%, and Maroons 10 %. Maroons are the descendants of West African slaves who were imported in the 17th and 18th centuries and escaped inland. The official language is Dutch, though English is widely used, as is the Surinamese Creole, Sranang Tongo (also called Taki-Taki). Hindustani (a dialect of Hindi), and Javanese are also spoken.
