Père Lachaise in Paris is one of the most famous cemeteries in the world. It is reputed to be the world's most visited cemetery, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors annually. Some 300,000 bodies are buried there, and many more in the columbarium, which holds the remains of those who had requested cremation. The main attraction of the cemetery is of course the many graves of famous people such as Jim Morrison, Edith Piaf, Isidora Duncan, Sarah Bernhardt, Yves Montand, Simone Signoret, Marcel Proust, Colette, Oscar Wilde, Gertrude Stein, Max Ernst, Frederic Chopin and many more. It is also the site of five Great War memorials. |
