Mali has paved roads leading from Bamako to Segou, Mopti and Sikasso, but many roads are unpaved. During the rainy season from mid-June to mid-September, some unpaved roads can be impassable. On many roads outside of the capital, deep sand and ditches are common and a four-wheel drive can be necessary to get around.
