Most traveling within Ethiopia is done by bus or minibus. There is no real functioning railroad system, few people can afford to travel by air, and even less can afford a car, so going bus is for many the only option. Bus rides in Ethiopia can be very entertaining, lively, social and good experiences, but they can also be exhausting, frustrating and very crammed. Busses are usually very old, and a broken bus can delay the trip for hours. Roads are often unpaved and in bad condition, so even short trips can take a very long time. Bigger cities and towns, and important sights can be reached by plane, so going by air can be an easy and comfortable alternative to the road.
